After a little bit of a break, Hye-Eli will be back early next week with writer Nancy Agabian. Stay tuned for this expressive and gifted artist, as well as for future interviews with Armen Chakmakian, Greg Yaghdjian and much more!
Hye-Eli currently has over 380 listeners and this number is growing every week!
We are sorry for not having posted an interview last week nor will we be able to this week. The flu has struck!
Please stay tuned for upcoming interviews with musician Armen Chakmakian, writer Nancy Agabian and dedicated Krikor (Koko) Yaghdjian, the Chairman of the Armenian Cultural Association of British Columbia and a long serving member of the Armenian Community of Vancouver.
Hye-Eli’s guest this week is Kev Orkian. As an ex-Londoner, I know Kev from the London community as well as his numerous shows! The last time I saw Kev, the Armenian Cultural Association had invited him to Vancouver with his one man show. Needless to say, it was a great success even with our small community here!
Kev is vibrant, energetic and no audience stays straighfaced in his presence. With a combination of intelligent humour and fantastic piano playing, Kev cannot go wrong.
Hye-Eli’s guest this week is Garik Gyurjyan, photographer and founder of One Armenia, a global Armenian network.
Garik is a Los Angeles based photographer. He teaches photography at California State University at Northridge. Graduating from Pasadena Art Center College of Design with a BFA degree in 2003, Garik has commissioned portraits for clients such as Times Magazine, Travel and Leisure Golf Magazine, Hollywood Records, DreamWorks Records, LA Weekly and others.
Garik is currently working on publishing a book of portraits of important and famous Armenians - the portraits below are from this upcoming book aptly titled ‘Children of Hayk’.
Garik spoke to Hye-Eli from LA about his work and One Armenia. Thanks for listening!
Hye-Eli’s guest today is Ara Steven Bozadjian, one of the directors of Jumpoff TV along with his brother Harry.
JumpOff TV is a thorough Hip Hop destination, featuring broadband TV, a social network and the latest news. Ara and Harry began their successful venture in 2003 as a weekly Hip Hop battle night in London’s Mean Fiddler venue, JumpOff.TV has evolved into a leading global Hip Hop Sports Entertainment Brand at the cutting edge of the digital revolution.
Ara and Harry were also one of the main players in the making of Hokis, the Armenian movement which brought thousands of young Armenians together in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Barlow received his M.A. and C. Philosophy degrees from UCLA, where he majored in Armenian Language and Literature through the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Literatures.
In 1985, he was hired at California State University to teach Armenian language, literature, and culture courses through the Armenian Studies Program. For the past twenty years he has taught Armenian language, history, literature, culture, church and a variety of courses on Armenia and the Armenians.
Barlow has frequently traveled to Armenia and in 1991 he was instrumental in the establishment of a link between Yerevan State University and California State University. In December of 2000, he was honored with an honorary Doctorate Degree from Yerevan State University.
For the past twenty years Barlow has been the advisor to the Armenian Students Organization on campus and advisor for the Hye Sharzhoom/Armenian Action newspaper.
Hye-Eli’s guest today is Armenian painter, author, playwright and actor, Vahe Berberian. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1955, he grew up in an intellectual milieu. His parents’ home was a meeting place open to friends from the worlds of theatre, literature and the arts. He currently lives in Los Angeles, where he moved to in 1976.
Vahé has participated in more than 30 individual and group exhibitions throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. Several components have been the key in the construction of his complex and rich aesthetic identity: His cross-cultural background, modern abstract expressions and working as an artist in Los Angeles.
Vahe spoke to us from his home in Los Angeles about his new play Baron Garbis and much more!
Hye-Eli’s interview this week is with filmmaker, Gariné Torossian. She was born in Beirut, Lebanon of Armenian descent. She moved to Canada in 1979.

Hrag Vartanian, a writer and a friend of Gariné’s gave us an insight into her work and Gariné as a person. Thank you Hrag!
I just watched Gariné’s new film, Stone Time Touch (2006), about which she speaks in the interview. It is a wonderful documentary film featuring Arsinée Khanjian, with whom Gariné collaborated with. Highly recommended!
This week’s interview on Hye-Eli is with Der Hovnan Demerjian. I knew Der Hovnan as Jason Demerjian, the Director of the Armenian Volunteer Corps at the time when I was volunteering with the organization in 2002/3.
Der Hovnan’s ordination to priesthood took place in June 2007. Der Hovnan now serves as Pastor in St Hagop Church in Florida with his wife by his side, Yeretsgin Anna.
I am sure Der Hovnan will make a difference in the Armenian community of Florida, with his energy, youth and passion.
Hye-Eli wishes Der Hovnan and Yeretsgin Anna all the best for 2008. The same goes to all our listeners!
Hye-Eli’s interview this week is with photographer, Nubar Alexanian. I was led to Nubar by Ara Oshagan and felt compelled to interview him. I thought it a shame that more Armenians weren’t aware of Nubar and his work.
Nubar has many books published including Stones In The Road: Photographs of Peru (Aperture Books, 1992). Nubar talks about the great Jazz musician and Trumpeter, Wynton Marsalis as well about his latest book, NONFICTION, photographs from the film sets of Errol Morris which will be out in April 2008.
